Ok. It's taken me FOREVER to get around to doing this, but here you go... Some of these pics are mine but some I stole from Liz and Corey cause they took waaaay more pictures than I did. Thanks, guys!
I don't think I took any pictures at all on Friday. And I don't really know why, although part of the problem may have been that we all ended up spending the majority of the afternoon traipsing around the city in the heat and then waiting in line for what seemed like a million years while we sweated to death and complained about the disorganized entrance situation. Once Liz and I finally got in we'd already missed Butch Walker so we were feeling pretty dejected. Poor us. We ended up getting something to drink and a snack and sitting in the shade by the Kidz stage and watching a band called The Terrible Two's. They weren't half bad.
After Bro found us we headed over to see Duffy. She was surprisingly good - I don't like a lot of girl singers but I did enjoy her set. And she was wearing a super cute outfit. I'd been trying to catch up with Dan for a while and finally met him by the AT&T stage to see Gogol Bordello. Gogol played Coachella, so I got to see part of their set in Cali, but about the time they started playing, I was hungry, and Renner had to go to the bathroom, and so we went off in search of food and toilets and missed a big chunk of their show. Their set at Lolla was so... I don't even know the right word... electric is a good description, I suppose. They have dancing girls and all sorts of interesting instruments and they just look like they're having a party. That was one of the highlights of the weekend.
After that me and Aaron went to see the Raconteurs. I was getting a bit worn out by that time in the day and honestly wasn't too focused (I was too busy eating bugs. Haha. HI AARON!) but they did sound great and their set was filmed in black and white. Very cool. Apparently I saw Radiohead that night but I have absolutely no memory of their set whatsoever. I wasn't drinking, either. I think Liz and I must have been talking or something... As you can tell, I am not a fan. Haha. I know that makes me fairly unpopular, but I really don't see what the big deal is about their music. It sounds like the crap you hear in an elevator, frankly.
This is me and Damien in the wine bar, not drinking:
After Radiohead we all headed to the condo we rented in Lincoln Park. We'd seen pictures of the place online but it was nicer than I thought it'd be, which was a good thing, since it ended up costing more than any of us really wanted to spend. It had a nice big living room/dining room and a wonderful kitchen that was fully stocked, plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, and internet access. It was so much nicer than staying in a hotel since we could all stay together and hang out.
We got up Saturday morning and Liz made a nice breakfast for all of us and then we got on the train to head back downtown. This is us in our alley:

This is me and Jon Preis on the way to the train:
I was dying to see Margot and the Nuclear So and So's at 12:15 but we didn't quite make it for that. We did, however, get to see The Ting Tings. Absolutely awesome. They had great energy and that started our day off on the right foot. It didn't hurt that it was the most beautiful summer day, either:

After their set there wasn't anybody we wanted to see for a little while, so me, Liz, Corey, and Aaron walked down to Millennium Park to see the bean and play in the fountain.

We went back to the festival in time for Aaron to see DeVotchKa, which I had wanted to see, but I opted to stay by the wine bar with Liz to talk for a while and get some sun instead. Aaron ended up going all by himself. And then I felt bad. But not bad enough to go with him. SORRY, AARON. :( It was nice to just sit around for a while.
We snagged a bunch of free mats from the wine bar and decided to just stay right where we were for the rest of the night. I did go and meet Dan and his friend (I totally forgot her name but she was really sweet...) and we watched The Toadies for a little while. They're seriously old. Which makes me feel old, because I listened to them in high school. Eek. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were playing at that same time but I didn't want to walk a mile to the other end of the park by myself to see them. Since I saw them at Coachella I didn't feel like I was completely missing out... but I am kind of kicking myself for not putting forth the effort to just go. They are amazing - like stepping back in time to the 60's. Hopefully they'll do a regular tour one of these days and I'll get to see them in a smaller venue where I can really enjoy a show.
After The Toadies (or maybe just before - the days all kind of blend together) I was talking with Dan and Mike and Mike was saying that he had free tickets for Flogging Molly's after show that night... and before I said a word Dan announced, "I know who'd like free tickets for Flogging Molly!!!" and asked me if I'd like them. I was so excited but also felt guilty because I had so many friends with me - Dan asked how many and I said eight. You just can't ask for eight free tickets, but they had four that they could spare. I knew it'd be hard to get everyone coordinated and also hard to decide who would come with... but it was much harder than I expected and we didn't end up making the show. I was super bummed. But I did have the Flogging Molly show on Sunday to look forward to, so it could have been worse. I've learned that festivals involve a lot of disappointment. There is absolutely no way that you could ever see every band that you love at a festival. There are too many long lines for bathrooms and food, too many people to push past to get anywhere very quickly, and the schedules just never work out. Grr.
I went back to our little spot after talking with Dan and Mike. We were sitting right at the corner of the wine bar fence and so people kept walking across our mats and through all our stuff. Someone had the bright idea to build a fence out of the bamboo from the bar:
It kept people out for a while, but after it got dark, it finally got completely demolished after a ton of people almost got skewered.
That night there were two sets that I wanted to see: Wilco and Rage Against the Machine. Of course, everyone wanted to see Rage, and I wasn't about to walk by myself in the dark allllll the way across the park to stand and watch Wilco alone, so Rage it was. I did like them in their heyday, but wasn't thrilled to see them. I was pretty distracted during their set. I had glow bracelets, and we spent part of their set playing with those instead of paying attention:

Then I saw this really old hippie lady. Who knew dirty old hippies were into Rage???
This guy was sort of drunk when he and his dumbass friends wandered over, but then he pulled out a flask that was camoflaged as a cell phone, and things went downhill from there. I kept waiting for him to fall down and crack his head open, but it never happened. What a douchebag.
After Rage we headed back to the condo for a shower and costume change before going out. These two are so cute together it kind of makes me want to puke. But in a good way:

Mat fight on the way home:
It took us a while to all get coordinated and showered and changed and we didn't end up leaving the condo until at least midnight. I don't think I've ever left at midnight to go out... Liz insisted that we all take a shot before we left but since we didn't have any shot glasses she resorted to using candlesticks instead. If that isn't creative drinking, I don't know what is. She and I had devised an evil scheme to take all the boys to a gay bar and not tell them so they'd have a rude surprise when we got in... But our plan was foiled and we went to Club Moda instead. It was really nice but the $20 cover was a bit much. I did end up having $20 worth of fun, though. And that's all I have to say about THAT:

I've never danced on a platform before. But I liked it. And I plan on doing it again. :)
This was right after I was molested by a lesbian. She really liked me. It was horrible. And I plan on NEVER doing that again. Grrrross.
I look so wasted in this picture but I didn't have anything to drink AT ALL. I blame all the dancing. Of course Liz still looks fresh as a daisy, but that could be because she's only 22 (*wink*) and I just turned the big 3-0. Haha.
When we left we were all starving so we went to McDonalds at 4 a.m.:
By the time we got on the train to go home I was exhausted:
We got home as the sun was coming up and got a few short hours of sleep before getting back up for the last day of the festival. I made breakfast Sunday morning and we left for Lolla fairly late. I'm not sure what time we actually got there but all I cared about that afternoon was seeing Flogging Molly:
They were perfection, as usual. I just wished it would have been as beautiful a day as Saturday was. After their set (where I danced BY MYSELF... I missed you, Jeanine!!!), we went over to the AT&T stage because everyone wanted to have a good spot for Kanye. We got there during Gnarls Barkley's set. YAWN. I expected much more from them. They weren't horrible, but I was definitely not impressed. I was so unimpressed that I didn't even stand up to see them:
There were so many people at the stage to see Kanye like an hour and fifteen minutes before his set that I decided I couldn't stand to be in that crowd for ONE MORE SECOND and, after shoving some dumb bimbo out of my way, I made a quick exit. I was not in the mood to be pushed around by a bunch of a-holes for three hours so I just stomped off to find a quieter place to sit and watch the show. Aaron ran after me, and after he was sweet enough to wait in an incredibly long line at the bathroom with me, we went to get some dinner and then found a spot on the hill by the MySpace stage to sit and eat. Dan had told me that Mark Ronson was really cool, so I thought I'd like to check him out, and I was glad that we did! His set was so fun. By the end of it there must've been about fifty people on stage:
After that, Aaron and I walked over closer to the AT&T stage to check out Kanye. We weren't impressed, and Aaron wanted to see Nine Inch Nails, so we walked over to see what was going on at the Bud Light stage.
Buckingham fountain was absolutely GORGEOUS that night:

We walked through the trees and saw this scene. It was breathtaking. I felt like I was in a painting:

I'm afraid my little picture doesn't do it justice, but the trees were filled with people trying to get a better view of NIN. The backdrop was beautiful:

I was surprised at how many NIN songs I knew. I remember them being on the radio a lot when I was a teenager (so many years ago - haha), but I was never a big fan. I think they may have converted me at Lolla, though. The real highlight of their set was watching a kid get arrested. I have no idea what he did but it must have been bad because he was violently thrown on the ground, cuffed, and dragged away in record time.
Before we left I really wanted to say goodbye to Dan but finding anyone in a crowd like that is ridiculous... and apparently I cannot follow directions AT ALL. Aaron and I headed back to the front gate to meet everyone that we'd left at Kanye. We decided that we wanted pizza so someone ordered it while we were on the train and we left Gill on the train so that he could go a couple more stops and pick up the pizza for us.
We had found robes in all the closets at the condo, and the whole weekend we were all excited to have a Robe Party... by the time Gill got back with our late dinner Liz and I were the only ones in our pj's and robes. The boys were all on their computers and had no interest in joining us. Our Robe Party was a complete failure. As you can see, I spent a large part of the weekend lying around being lazy:

Monday morning we got up pretty early and had breakfast before we all settled in to watch a superb episode of Walker, Texas Ranger featuring Hulk Hogan. Yeah, I know. WE WERE IN CHICAGO WATCHING WALKER, TEXAS RANGER. How sad is that??? After the show was over the boys packed up the car, we said our goodbyes to Aaron, Corey, and Jon Preis - Aaron had to fly home and Corey and Jon were taking the bus - and then we went to Michigan Avenue to do some shopping before stopping for gyros and hot dogs and then heading home.

The drive home seemed like it lasted for days... we listened to Mitch Hedberg and giggled until we ran out of energy to giggle any more. It was honestly one of the best trips I've been on, which was a nice surprise, because after what we all went through to get there and get coordinated, I had my doubts. I cannot wait to do it again next year. What do you say, guys? August 7 - 9, 2009? I think we should start a tradition...
